Oakland Legacy Project

The Legacy Project provides during and after school programming for youth. Legacy curriculum bridges the arts, environmental awareness, local history and community advocacy. This program currently serves Allendale Elementary, Martin Luther King Jr Elementary School, Frick United Academy of Language, West Oakland Middle School, Hoover Elementary School, Ralph Bunche High School, and Street Academy Alternative School.

Legacy: After School Leadership

The after school leadership cohort of our Oakland Legacy Project supports youth in developing powerful, educated voices for social and environmental justice in their communities. Students are able to work side by side with experienced artists, environmentalists, farmers and activists, all who support them in their journeys as young visionaries. Throughout the year we delve into our own ancestries and the history of the land we occupy, learn urban farming techniques, create art, and take field trips with the goal of creating a deeper connection with our land and one another.

The after school cohort is open to students aged 13-18, with the opportunity to earn $500+ stipends from consistent participation.

“I am a very anxious person and I occasionally will become closed off to the people around me, but when I am with AHC, all of my worries go away. This safe space is never discriminating or criticizing, I feel emotionally and physically safe here. I am not afraid to show my real self.”

- Rodney Marshall, 11th grade, Emery High (2019)
